Lorenzia "Laurie" E. Oakes
Lorenzia “Laurie” Eva Oakes, 93, of Gaylord, MN, formerly Aberdeen, SD, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Bay Side Manor in Gaylord, MN.
Lorenzia Eva Heier was born on June 14, 1931, to John & Julia (Hardy) Heier in Hosmer, SD. Laurie grew up in Hosmer and moved to Aberdeen after finishing school and worked at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital as a ward clerk. There, she met her future husband Stephen Oakes Sr., whom she later married on November 17, 1952, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen. They were blessed with five children: Steven Jr., Deb, Rich, Bonnie, and Robert.
Laurie continued working at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital until her husband Steve was elected Sheriff; she then worked at the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, working in different areas within the department. Laurie traveled in the role of deputy numerous times with her husband.
Lorenzia was an active member of the Peace Officers Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters of America, and Boys & Girls Scouts of America, serving as Den Mother of Pack 182 O.M. Tiffany. Laurie received many awards for her years of service. She officially retired on January 2, 1995, traveling to the East Coast during the winter months.
Lorenzia is survived by her children: Deb Hansen, Rich (Linda) Oakes, and Bonnie Weber; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sister, Regina (Caroll) Reis; brothers: Albert Heier, Eugene (Betty) Heier, Larry (Cora) Heier; brother-in Law Will (Judy) Oakes; sister-in-law, Kitty Oakes; and many nieces and nephews.
Lorenzia was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Oakes Sr.; sons, Steve Jr. (Joeleen) Oakes and Robert Oakes; son-in-law, Brian Weber; brother Leo (Francis); sisters Catherine (Wilfred) Kappenmann and Ann Kolash; sister-in-law, Katherine Heier; sister and brother-in-law Margaret (Tom) Thornley; and brother-in-law William Oakes Jr.
