About Sunset Memorial Gardens
A Legacy of Care
Sunset Memorial Gardens operates a mausoleum, columbarium, ossuary and cemetery in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Set on over twenty-three acres along U.S. Highway 12 on the East side of Aberdeen, there could be no better resting place for our loved ones.
Choosing a final resting place for our loved ones is one of the most important, and often difficult, tasks we face. In our culture, cemeteries are not just the place where we bury our family and friends. Cemeteries provide a location to memorialize and commemorate the lives of our ancestors.
We believe that the care a family receives when coping with grief will contribute to their healing. Our staff is honored to provide care and comfort to the families that it serves.
Our History
Sunset Memorial Gardens was established in 1953 as a Perpetual Care Cemetery following the guidelines set forth by the State of South Dakota. Sunset Memorial Gardens is the only true Perpetual Care cemetery within 200 miles of Aberdeen. We are happy to serve families of all faiths.
In 1998 Sunset Memorial Gardens expanded with the opening of its Mausoleum that includes indoor and outdoor crypts and indoor niche spaces. This building also houses the office space for the cemetery.
Sunset Today
A “Garden of Honor” was established in 2005 for the purpose of honoring the veterans of the military and their spouses. This garden includes a memorial monument for each branch of the United States Armed Services. There is also a veterans memorial at the front entrance of the cemetery. This memorial honors all military veterans at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In order to help control operating costs in 2010, geothermal heat and air conditioning was added to the mausoleum building along with some decorating updates. The Mausoleum Chapel has become the focal point of cemetery committal services since 2010, offering families a comfortable and safe place for the committal service.
The Garden of Calvary was established in 2012 to accommodate families wanting upright monuments to memorialize their loved ones. With the increase in cremations, Sunset installed an ossuary in 2018 along with outside niches.
