Evelyn S. Reints
Evelyn Sofie Hanson was born August 16, 1927, in Marshall County, SD to Hans and Katherine (Hoines) Hanson. She received her early education in rural country schools and graduated from Langford High School, class of 46. During high school and after graduation she worked at Erickson’s Grocery Store in Langford.
On May 23, 1948, she married James “Jim” Reints in Langford, SD. They made their home on the family farm, where they raised their three children, Kathleen, Paul and David. Evelyn was a woman of many talents. She was a wife, mother, cook, hired hand on the farm, and tended to her garden – there were very few things that she did not do to keep the house and farm running smoothly. They remained on the farm until 1989 before moving to town so their son Paul could operate the family farm. Jim passed away in March 2004 and Evelyn stayed in Langford until selling the house in 2018. She then moved to an apartment in Langford. After a couple of years in the apartment she moved into assisted living for a short time before entering Wheatcrest Hills in 2021.
Evelyn loved cooking and baking, especially her famous buns, lefse and kringla! Hosting holidays and cooking the meals over the years are times she cherished with her family. Her garden was always well tended, and her lawn mowed, even into her 90s! She was always on the go and always wanted to take in all the grandkids activities she could. She also liked to travel and was especially happy the two times she was able to visit her cousins in Norway. She never sat idle, but when she did take a moment, she was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards with friends, and crocheting and knitting keepsakes for the family.
Evelyn’s faith and Bible reading were a big part of her everyday life. She was a devoted servant as a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school for many years; she served in WELCA, and did many other volunteer activities. She was also active in the Langford senior citizens group. Evelyn was very devoted to her family and an amazing role model for all of us.
Evelyn passed away Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton, at the age of 96.
Evelyn is survived by her children: Kathleen “Kathy” (Roger) Carlson of Bath, SD, Paul (Marcia) Reints of Langford, SD and David (Gaylene) Reints of Chanhassen, MN; her grandchildren: Nicole (Richard) Reis, Aaron (Tiffany) Carlson, Theresa Bistodeau, Devin (Ashley) Reints, Jade (Austin) Dresow, Colin (Anne) Reints and Courtney (Max) Havlish; ten great-grandchildren; and her brother, Harold Hanson of Gardnerville, NV.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; her grandson, Troy Bistodeau; and her siblings: Lowell Hanson, Anna Marie Strand and Helen Hanson.
