Esther Aman
Esther Aman, 95, of Aberdeen, SD, died August 11, 2024, at Bethesda Home in Aberdeen, SD.
Esther Herman was born to Christ and Emma (Kirschenman) Herman at Eureka, SD, where she attended school. Later in life, Esther furthered her education by attending school of commerce.
On April 23, 1944, she married Julius Aman at Eureka, SD. They made their home in Hosmer until 1952.The family moved to Igloo, SD, until 1954. They moved to Aberdeen, where they owned and operated Home Cafe for one year and then operated the Spur Lounge and Steakhouse until 1967. Esther started work for Brown County and was appointed to be Director of Commodities in 1967. In 1968 she headed up the Food Stamps and WIC programs. In 1979, Esther was appointed to Brown County Welfare Department. She received many recognitions from the State Department of Social Services. Poor health forced her to retire in 1991.
Esther was a lifetime member of the Congregational Church. She was a Deacon, was active in Ladies Aide and church Bible studies, and loved to sing hymns in church. She loved cooking and baking, especially for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Esther made many beautiful crafts, enjoyed reading, and loved the outdoors. She and Julius spent fourteen winters in Mesa; AZ. Esther loved her family very much. She said her life was never the same after losing her daughter and friend, Lorinne, to cancer in 1985.
Grateful for having shared Esther’s life are her son: LeRoy (Sherry) Aman of Aberdeen; three grandchildren, Shannon (Jane) Aman, Scott (Nicole) Gradberg, Schimayne (Chuck)Hanisch; six great-grandchildren, Lindsay Aman, Nathan Gradberg, Kaitlin Gradberg, Paige Hanisch, Joseph Hanisch and Clayton Hanisch; sister: Violet Schmidt (Don) Zessard; sister-in-law: Judy Herman; and her half-sister: Deloris(Tony) Marion.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Christ and Emma Herman; her husband: Julius Aman; daughter, Lorrine Gradberg; two grandchildren, Lynn and Raquel Aman; and her siblings: Edmund Herman, Herbert Herman, Ruben Herman, Christ Herman, Eugene Herman, Frida Kallenberger, and Leah Murphy.
